Once famous as the site of (former) East Germany’s largest civil airport, Schönefeld today is better known as a major center for professional services and development. Nowadays, business travelers looking to collaborate and form lasting relationships with German companies flock here, taking advantage of the incredible commercial and industrial presences and the excellent lodging and hospitality services that have been built around them–the soon-to-be-completed, sprawling Berlin Brandenburg Airport only adds to the appeal. With easy access to the German capital city of Berlin, consider a stay in Schönefeld, whether you travel for business, pleasure, or a hearty mix of both.
Schönefeld is technically located in the Dahme-Spreewald district of the German state of Brandenburg, which encloses the city-state of Berlin. Roughly 22 km from Berlin city center, this suburb is readily connected to the rest of the nation by train and bus, as well as to domestic and international destinations via the Schönefeld Airport (slated to be merged into the Berlin Brandenburg Airport when it opens in 2016.)
Schönefeld features an active and sprawling commercial and business park, as well as an industrial zone. The Berlin ExpoCenter Airport is a recently-opened multi-purpose exhibition ground, built in anticipation of the massive upcoming Berlin Brandenburg Airport and the international conventions and conferences that it will attract. Each year, the Berlin Air Show–one of the world’s most important aerospace trade fairs–takes place here.
Schönefeld itself is primarily a hub for business and industry, but its prime location at the southern end of Berlin means easy access to the incredible array of museums, monuments, parks, and nightlife that Germany’s capital city offers up. While vacationers and business travelers alike may choose to spend the night in one of Schönefeld’s many hotels, a trip to the city center is just a short bus or train ride away.
It’s not “all work and no play” in Schönefeld. Though this suburb is largely dedicated to business activities, the mega-city of Berlin is mere kilometers to the north. Visitors can take in the history of the Berlin Wall or numerous museums; escape into the trails of the Grunewald Forest; shop for bargains at the Mauerpark Flea Market; and much, much more. If the outdoors are more to your taste, consider venturing south instead to the Spreewald Biosphere Reserve in Brandenburg–with around 18,000 species spread across wetlands, rivers, and sandy dry forests, there’s no shortage of exploration to be done.
