The city originated in 1230, when land was purchased by Count Floris IV. of Holland to build a hunting residence. A few hundred years later, it became the seat of the government for the Dutch Republic and still had not received city status, though it enjoyed most of the city rights. In the 1850s, the town began building up significantly, becoming even more important for the government, and many streets and houses were built specifically for civil servants. After much of the city was rebuilt in the 1960s, residents began to flock to the area, causing a jump in population. In the 1990s, the city annexed surrounding areas to help with its growth.
This is the largest city on the North Sea within The Netherlands. Both Westland and Wateringen are to the south of the city, and it lies on the south-western corner of one of the largest urban areas in Europe. Divided into districts, some of the wealthiest areas in the country can be found here. Residents enjoy an oceanic climate featuring more sunshine than surrounding areas as well as mild winter and summer temperatures.
The Hague is still dominated by diplomats and a large number of civil servants with a good chunk of the jobs available being offered by the Dutch government. Many of the main industries include the ministries of Defense, Transport, Public Works, and Foreign Affairs. Tourism is a large secondary industry, bringing in a lot of money. It is actually the second most popular tourist destinations in the country after Amsterdam.
Performing arts and entertainment are very popular with residents here, and there are several cultural complexes featuring theatres and cinemas, with numerous Pathé cinema, and Circustheater is a musical theatre offering performances year round. The creams of the crop, though, are the many historical sites like Ridderzaal, the castle that the city was originally built around. Noordeinde Palace has belonged to the Dutch royal family since the 1500s.
If you like culture and shopping, De Passage is the place to be. It was the first covered shopping mall in the country, and contains specialty shops and boutiques. Once you've had a day of shopping, head down to the sea front, where you'll find many bars, restaurants, and even gambling halls, especially busy in the summer time. If you're a sports fan, you're also in luck, with teams for ice hockey, darts, football, cricket, and handball.
