Nestled in amongst glorious surrounding countryside, Brühl was among the first towns in Germany to invest in an eco-friendly environment. As a result, this picturesque UNESCO World Heritage Site has a network of cycle paths that offer an array of tours including the wealth of castles that dot the landscape of the North Rhine-Westphalia region. The affluent palaces of Augustusburg and Falkenlust are high on the list of priorities for most visitors for their beauty and historical interest, whereas fun seekers head to Phantasialand amusement park–especially visitors with kids in tow; but you don’t need to use your children as an excuse to indulge in some fun, many adult couple go there as well!
Brühl is located 20 km south of Cologne in the Rhein-Erft district and is easily accessible by road and train from Cologne Central. Although cars are convenient for exploring the beautiful scenery in the surrounding areas, the region of North Rhine-Westphalia encourages visitors to rest their engines and expunge their energy on a bicycle.
Industry in the region heavily relied on coal in the late 19th century, with the first ironworks being established in 1888. Today, the Eisenwerk Brühl employs the majority of the locals. Furthermore, breweries were settled in Brühl, trying to live up to neighbouring Cologne, which is famous for its different Koelsch brands. Today, the popular Kabänes herbal liqueur is brewed here by the Flimm KG, a Cologne family business.
The cultural draw of Brühl are the impressive 18th Century Augustusburg and Falkenlust Palaces built by Archbishop Clemens August. Listed as UNESCO protected buildings, the palaces together with the expansive gardens added in the 19th Century are set in beautiful surroundings where the Archbishop used to practice falconry. If you are staying in Brühl for several days or more, it is advisable to invest in the Rheintaler, which entitles you to discounted admission to the palaces and hunting lodge together with around 160 other museums, galleries, restaurants, and shops between Dusseldorf and Speyer.
The North Rhine-Westphalia region is among the best nature resorts in Germany and boasts hundreds of walks with breathtaking scenery and awe-inspiring fairy-tale castles. If fun rather than fauna is more your thing, head to the Phantasialand amusement park, a historical institute geared towards families and thrill-seeking adults. Rollercoaster rides, the mystery castle, and rapid river rides are on offer for adventurous hardballs.
