If you are looking for an exquisite weekend getaway, look no further than Lugano in the Canton of Ticino, Switzerland. Its peaceful mountain and bay views will leave you awed and breathless, as you sit watching the sunset over the lakeside city. Add to that the lakeshore activities, historic squares, and booming nightlife - and you’re definitely in for quite a treat. One of the most beautiful and popular destinations in Europe, this Swiss escape will have you living the sweet life!
South of the Alpine mountains and on the shore of a lake rests a city called Lugano. Located right by the bay where the River Cassarate meets Lake Lugano, the city forms a beautiful half-moon around the water. The 9th largest city in all of Switzerland, it is also Italian-speaking, as it borders Italy. Getting around is easy, since the city is served by a wonderful network of motorways as well as railways and the Lugano Airport.
As one of the biggest cities in the country, Lugano is known for its progressive economy. Besides tourism, it is also strong in trade and finance. It is home to over a hundred banking companies like CIM Bank, Corner Bank Group, and Société Générale Private Banking. It is the third largest financial center in Switzerland. Close to 50 hotels dot the city, and ensure accommodation in all categories.
With its beautiful lake and surrounding mountains, Lugano offers a lot of outdoor attractions. It has more than 300 kilometers of biking trails, numerous hiking spots, and water activities. Monte Bre, the nearest mountain to the city, provides panoramic views of the landscape. If its art that you’re after, the Museo Cantonale d’Arte exhibits paintings by world-renowned artists Renoir and Degas. The San Lorenzo Cathedral is also a must-see spot, with its Lombardy Renaissance-style and Baroque items. Intricate statues are peppered around the city, too. Two of the most impressive are the Eros Bendato in the Parco Civico and Spartacus in the Palazzo Civico.
If you happen to visit Lugano in October, be sure to check out the Festa d’Autunno. A gastronomic feast, it features the city’s best samplings of food and wine. Be sure you come hungry, because you’ll be wanting to grab a bite of everything! And what would a visit to the lakeside city be without a boat ride on Lake Lugano?
