Located just 22-minutes north from the Bavarian capital of Munich, Unterföhring provides an easy-to-reach escape from the dramas of the city. Perched on the River Isar, this small town is the ideal base in which to explore the superb surroundings of Bavaria or visit on a day trip as an alternative to Munich. The local history museum and traditional restaurants enable you to learn about the regions past and sample to local cuisine and culture – not forgetting the range of famous Bavarian beers on tap.
Unterföhring is connected to Munich by road and rail, which make the small town easy to reach from the city. International visitors will most likely arrive in Munich’s international airport from where you can take the S-8 railway to the centre and on to Unterföhring. When arriving by rail, take a moment to admire the stations artwork.
There is little in the way of business opportunities in Unterföhring, although the 8 television studios located here may give rise for company marketers to visit to shoot publicity footage or conduct promotional interviews. The Bavaria Studios are one of the biggest names in German TV production and have many studios located in and around Bavaria.
Visitors to Unterföhring should check out the local history museum to learn something about the evolution of the town and its connection with Munich. The beautiful baroque church of St. Valentine is also worth a visit to admire the architecture and morbid curiosity of the neighbouring cemetery where you can allow your imagination to run wild. The Franc-German War Memorial tells more tales of the town’s history whilst the 19th Century farmhouse on Kanalstrasse give you a glimpse into the past.
The majority of visitors to Unterföhring will come for the wealth of outdoor activities, and with miles of woodland pastures to explore along the many nature trails, there is no shortage of options. In the summer, walking and bicycle rides are a great way to get out and about, whilst in the winter snow it is not usual for locals to don their skis and head out for some cross-country skiing.
